The purpose of the study is to establish whether strength training exercises can
improve strength, motor function, physical activity, and quality of life
in children and adolescents with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA).
Participants from ages 5 to 21 years old who have SMA Type II or III and
live within a hour of the University of Utah may be eligible. A
physical therapist will come to the participants' homes and supervise a
progressive strength-training program targeting the arm/ leg muscles
three-times-per-week for 3 months.
