MDA Awards 13.7 Milion USD in Research Grants

Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) awarded 40 new grants aimed at uncovering the underlying molecular causes of, and developing therapies for, many of the diseases in its program.

The 40 new grants will support research in 22 specific diseases in MDA's program, including spinal muscular atrophy.

The grant connected directly to SMA was awarded to Lisa Baumbach, associate professor in the departments of neurology, pediatrics and biochemistry at the Miller School of Medicine at the University of Miami. The funds will help Baumbach continue to search for disease-causing genes responsible for infantile (either X-linked or type 1) SMA.

While this is the only project directly connected to SMA, there are several others whose research is fairly general and might help with a number of muscular diseases.
