Creating Motor Neurons to treat SMA and ALS

A team of Harvard scientists successfully used skin cells to create, what they called, induced motor neurons (iMNS), reported in detail by Science Direct.

Stem cells have been something of a holy grail of medicine for the past few years. Unfortunately the application of stem cells has often proven to cause various kinds of cancer. The method described by the Harvard stem cell researchers does not include the creation of so called induced pluripotent stem cells (iPS). Creating iMNS is also much faster.

The iMNS may prove to be useful in direct treatment of SMA and ALS or at least to help in the research and speed it up.
